intensive insulin therapy
Hello everyone,
I have been a type II diabetic for the past 10 years. Right now I'm on glucothage and two types of insulin. I take Lantis once a day to simulate what would be the normal basal insulin. When I have meals or snacks I take a quick acting insulin, Humalog to bolus the food being ingested. Following this regimen, requires that I take my blood sugars many times a day, I feel motivated to continue doing this because my blood sugars are very stable my last A1 C. was 5.3.
Does anyone have any Comments about this?

Re: intensive insulin therapy
Hi Warren,
Are they happy about yr HbA1C being that low?
OK stupid question I guess as most of them want it as low as possible without you becoming comatose...but I would have thought 5.3 was on the low side and they would be looking at an average of at least 6.0?
Best wishes
Nick

A1c
Hi Nick:
No, I don't think that my A1c Is very low. The following table shows the equivalent blood sugar versus the a1c. eAG Estimated Average Glucose
A1C (%) EAG
(mg/dl)
5 97
5.5 111
6 126
6.5 140
7 154
7.5 169
8 183
8.5 197
9 212
9.5 226
10 240
10.5 255
11 269
11.5 283
12 298
So my blood sugar reading is in the low normal range. My big problem right now, is that I'm overweight. Because of my insulin resistance I have to take very large amounts of insulin to keep my sugar within this range. As I lose weight I hope that my insulin needs will adjust to a much lower level. Bye for now!

Re: intensive insulin therapy
Warren,
Thanks for posting that and it makes total sense.
Good luck on the weight loss, I'm struggling to lose any significant amount at the moment too.
Take care
Nick
