Hello!!

Post  hannahw on Wed Oct 22, 2008 10:09 pm

Hello, im new to this forum, just been reading the nov-dec balance magazine and came across this forum so thought i'd join and give it my support! i was diagnosed with type 1 in december 2004 and i feel like i don't take it serious enough. i keep thinking to myself, right, i'll start testing alot more tomorow, but tomorow never comes! and i can never motivate myself to do it! i've been asked to start carb count and i was on a 72 hour monitor, which i enjoyed and i'm considering going on a pump, (i'm currently injecting four times a day) reading stories about people having heart problems and amputations and so on, scares me and i don't want this to happen and i just wanted general advice, and people of a similar age to talk to! (im 18) because i know nobody else around my area who is diabetic!!

Hello Hannah,

I know quite a few people in my area who are diabetic, mostly type 2. My GP reassures me that amputations are rare, and only for people who don't follow the rules. I also know people who have been on insulin for many decades with no problems. If you are worried, the best people to talk to are your GP and diabetic care team.

Hi Hannah and welcome to the board. I understand the "can't motivate myself" bit... I think everyone finds it hard on and off in their lives to do what is best for themselves - I am certainly one of those people. As you say, you will find it hard if you have noone around to discuss it with and who maybe can motivate you to do better. Have you spoken to your local group? There are lots of diabetes groups around and your doctors surgery should know when they meet and their contact number... Smile
And we'll be here for you too. alien

Hi hannah, what can I say I was so unmotivated, and as for exercise and my name in the same sentence, forget it. But, you'll get there, believe me you will, talk to people, say what you think and feel, I'm on two injections a day and have been for about 28 years (have been Type 1 for 34 years). Give everything a try until you find a treatment that you feel happy with, don't take no for an answer, sadly the NHS is all about money and not about care these days, but stick to your guns and your gut instinct where your diabetes is concerned, you're always in charge. If I can help, ask away, I pop into the forum - well I seem to pop up everywhere (sorry admins) Surprised

JG - I agree with your post and to the bit I have quoted, my response would be "I like people who are around and helpful".... "thanks"... Very Happy
