Operations and type 2 meds..

Post  Shona on Tue Jul 20, 2010 11:13 am

Dave is booked in today to have a (long awaited, 2 kids later) vasectomy. But the staff have told him not to take him Metformin this morning, he's supposed to take 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. They have said if his blood sugar levels are higher than 10 they wont perform the operation under general, and when his blood was tested on the 7th it was 8.8... so surely he should be taking his pills? Or is there something about metformin that could affect the anaesthetic?

Dave is back home after his operation. There was some kind of mix up at the hospital and for some reason by the time he actually got there they had decided he didnt need to over night after all. They finger prick tested his blood sugar levels which showed 9.2, which they put down to the fact that he had been fasting since first thing and hadnt taken his metformin.

I had a bit of a look about on the internet last night, and have decided for the meantime that google is NOT my friend. I found a couple of bits of info that said it was advised that metformin be avoided for 48 hours prior to surgery and some bits that said there was no reason to cut it out before hand.

Hi Shona,

Normally a vasectomy is done under local and there for shouldn't have required him to be off metformin.

With a general anaesthetic they take you off metformin and replace it with insulin for as short a period as possible.

Help any??

Dave had been for a vasectomy in December last year under a local and despite being given 4 injections he could still feel everything, so the doctor aborted and referred him on for it to be done under general. He only skipped one dose of metformin, and as far as i know they didnt offer him anything in its place, but he was told he could continue with his pills that evening.
Things would be easier for me if he'd just ask these questions before hand and notify me lol

Ouch he has my sympathies on the first one!!

If it helps tell him I had a gay guy mince into theatre and tell me that he was there to shave me. I told him I had already done all of that and that he wasn't getting any closer than my feet.

He got all Larry Grayson and sulky and threw all his teddies out of his pram and nearly cried and then minced back out again!!

He shaved himself the first time, but on Tuesday they waited until he was under the effects of the anaesthetic before shaving himself, he assumes it was done by one of the two female nurses lol
