Race for life, cancer research
On Sunday i shall be participating in the 5k Race for Life in Loughborough. I signed up for it in April and have been training for it since then with 3 gym sessions a week. Being over weight and really unfit with little exercise for many years and suddenly eager to push myself, i was unfortunate enough to develop shin splints (and blisters after yesterdays session oops) as a result i probably wont able to run it, but i have been practising hard on the treadmill. This week will be spent doing 5k on the treadmill, trying to get my time down. Have so far managed to raise £59.

Re: Race for life, cancer research
Claire thanks for the encouragement, I wish i could run/jog it like i initially set out, but in the end im just pleased that at the very least i can walk it.
Nick thank you very much. You can sponsor online (very secure) http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/shonalawrence and will pm you my personal details if you'd rather send the cheque
I suffered with shin splints several years ago, partly due to my weight and ill fitting shoes, and trying to walk up very steep hills quickly, unfortunately i didnt realise what was happening at the time. Wish i had known to be more careful this time round. At least i have good supportive shoes now though

Re: Race for life, cancer research
Well i made it across the finish line without passing out or being carried.
By 2k i had a new blister on my little toe (right foot again), but i managed to find the strength to update my facebook status to let everyone know how i was doing.
I missed the 3k marker, and was beginning to feel a little down that i was taking so long when suddenly the 4k marker popped up and i realised i was almost home. Managed to finish with a burst of speed and gained a time of 56:11 minutes, which im incredibly pleased with. Total raised so far is £76. No sign of the dreaded shin splints today, but i didnt run very far really.
Glutton for punishment i have signed up for next year
Nick thank you very much for your kind donation, i had the pleasure of seeing that last night before going to bed. I still have a sponsor form to collect back from my dad (cheekily sent him to work with one) so i dont know if i have made my target yet or not, but every penny raised helps.
Imogen than you very much for your donation. The support means a lot to me xx

Re: Race for life, cancer research
Nick its a very very kind offer, but there really isn't any need for you to do that.
Going to take myself off and soak in the bath before heading off to bed for some much needed sleep. Dont remember the last time i felt this tired lol. At least its a good tired.

Re: Race for life, cancer research
Still completely pooped. Think i might need a week in bed to get over it, but incredibly proud of myself for doing it. Have contacted Cancer Research UK to ask about the possibility of arranging an event in my home town next year since i know so many people who would participate if the event was a bit more local... Just have to wait for them to get back to me. Regardless of the location, i SHALL be running next year, i imagine with a year to prepare i should be fit enough to make it all the way round.
This is something i have been considering doing since i was pregnant with my now (almost) 6 year old when my mother inlaw was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Thankfully hers was caught in the early stages and with surgery managed to avoid chemo. She is currently free from cancer. I have been fortunate that i haven't lost anyone to cancer, and i want to ensure my kids dont have to suffer that pain either.
So i thank you all again for your support. It means a lot.
Now i just have to decide on my next fund-raiser... I haven't decided if it will be "walk the extra mile" or "care for a cuppa" for diabetes UK. Decisions, decisions.

Re: Race for life, cancer research
